A modest proposal for the betterment of society - the outlawing of poor people
I would like to appeal that we make it a crime to be poor.
Everyone knows that despite overwhelming scientific evidence, your environment doesn't affect whether you grow up rich or poor. It doesn't matter what you were raised in a broken household ,in a 1-room HDB flat while working in McDonalds and part-timing in school to pay off loansharks. No, being poor is a personal choice. Therefore, it is justifiable that we ban you from being poor. The majority of Singaporeans demand that you pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. Or else we will throw you in jail.
Actually, that was all a smokescreen. The whole point that I raised and you will consistently harp upon regarding "nurture vs. nature" is just to obfuscate issues. While you would have the choice to do whatever and be whatever in a free society, unfortunately I and my supporters shall distract you from that inalienable right by making irrelevant comments about how you have a choice.
In reality, we simply don't like the way poor people are and think they should be thrown into jail. After all, none of our friends are poor and if they were poor, because of our social and religious beliefs against poverty, we would disown them anyway. How can anyone choose to be poor?! Nobody would ever think of imposing our social/personal beliefs on poor people, but the majority holds these beliefs, so poor people must hold them too.
Alternatively, they can be imprisoned
Being poor also detrimentally affects the family unit. Being poor results more often than not in divorce and separation. This is statistically proven. For the sake of the continuation of our traditional Singaporean morals and values, I thus demand a ban on poor people.
Poor people are more likely to be hedonistic. They are more likely to be "wild-rocker-types" and impinge on my conservative values. As a social class they have a propensity for loud colours and ugly clothes that disturb the tranquillity of our country. As such, I demand they be put behind bars.
Also, Poor people are more likely to be sick. In the age of AIDS and the bird flu and mad cow disease, poor people will be carriers which will doom the entire population of Singapore. Disregard all my points above, this is not a debate about morality or civil liberties. It is above all a public health issue. Think of the children! By isolating poor people and placing them under armed guard, we will have safeguarded our island from HIV and future attacks of SARS.
As such, please consider my request to ban a group I irrationally dislike, taking into consideration my imagined, ridiculous justifications which i use as a veneer of respectability while making bigoted attacks.

( I'd like to suggest that as a sign of tolerance for poor people, we merely make legislation but do not enforce it. This addition to our penal code would thus only serve as a distinct signal that we disapprove of poverty.
Also, I want to make clear that in signing this act, we are only condemning the act of being poor, and not poor people themselves or their behaviour)

a wonderful piece of work i should say. bravo. Well, though it didn't affect me directly coz i wasn't concerned (yet) with the big hurrah surrounding a law governing people's sex lives... i personally find it very wrong that there are such laws. well, if you want me to substantiate my view, just look online i'm lazy to think :p
btw, if you still couldn't find out why i praised it.... do you know ANYTHING about the debate regarding repealing/keeping 377a?!
